Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6570

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that when I accepted Islam, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go and take a bath with water and lote-tree leaves (sidr), and shave off from your body the hair of disbelief (from the days of ignorance)," and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his blessed hand over my head.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is extremely weak (da'if bi-marrah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mansur bin 'Ammar and Ma'ruf Abu al-Khattab are not strong, and they are munkar al-hadith.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 22/ 199, al-Saghir 880), Abu al-Shaykh in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Asbahan" (469), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (9/ 329) and "Akhbar Asbahan" (2/ 37 - 38), and Ibn 'Asakir (62/ 355 and 356), via various routes from Sulaym bin Mansur, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is reported from Qatadah al-Rahawi in Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (2618) and al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (19/ 20), via Qatadah bin al-Fudayl — also said to be al-Fadl bin 'Abd Allah bin Qatadah al-Rahawi — from his father al-Fudayl, from his father's uncle Hisham bin Qatadah, from his father Qatadah al-Rahawi: that he accepted Islam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Qatadah, take a bath …", and he mentioned the like of it.
Grading: This chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is that al-Fudayl and his uncle Hisham bin Qatadah are majhul (unknown). Several people narrated from Qatadah bin al-Fudayl, but his being declared thiqah is not reported from anyone other than Ibn Hibban, and Ibn Abi Hatim reported from his father that he said he is merely a "shaykh" (i.e. not strong); therefore he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is also the narration of Qays bin 'Asim al-Minqari that when he accepted Islam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to bathe with water and lote-tree leaves (sidr).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (34/ 20611), Abu Dawud (355) and others.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is narrated from Kulayb al-Juhani that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I have accepted Islam", and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Remove from yourself the hair of disbelief", meaning: shave.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (24/ 15432) and Abu Dawud (356).
Grading: Its chain is "extremely weak" (ghayah fi al-du'f), as Ibn al-Qattan stated in "Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham" (5/ 43).
Note / Clarification: "Sidr" is the lote tree (nabiq). Its leaves are ground, mixed with water and used for cleaning and washing.
