Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6563

It is narrated from Makhul that I came to Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu al-Asqa', narrate to us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which there is no doubt, no addition and no possibility of forgetfulness. He asked: Has any one of you recited anything of the Qur'an tonight? We said: Yes, but we have not retained it (word for word, exactly as it was revealed). He said: This Qur'an is present among you in written form and you spare no effort in preserving it, and despite that you think that you add to it or omit from it; then what about hadiths that we heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and perhaps we heard them only once? It is sufficient for you that when we narrate a hadith to you, we convey its meaning (correctly).
One of his kunyahs is also said to be Abu Qirsafah.
