Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6501

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and I were presented before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (for participation) on the day of Badr, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us back because we were too young; then we took part in the Battle of Uhud.
Imam al-Hakim says: At the beginning of this chapter I cited, from the narration of Yazid bin Harun, the statement of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) took part in Badr, but this chain is stronger than that. Moreover, the two Shaykhs agreed on the hadith that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was presented at the age of fourteen and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not permit him, and at the Trench he granted him permission, and that was the first battle in which he took part. And Allah knows best.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name is corrupted (in error) and written as "'Umarah".

Grading: Its chain is strong (qawi), on account of the presence of Abu al-Ahwas and 'Ammar bin Ruzayq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq mentioned in the chain is 'Amr bin 'Abd Allah al-Sabi'i.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1163) via Yahya bin Adam, from 'Ammar bin Ruzayq, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Mutarrif bin Tarif corroborated (mutaba'ah) 'Ammar bin Ruzayq in narrating it from Abu Ishaq, as found in Ibn Abi Shaybah's "al-Musannaf" (6/ 542 and 7/ 361).
Reference / Source: Sharik bin 'Abd Allah al-Nakha'i narrated it in Imam Ahmad 30 / (18633), Shu'bah in al-Bukhari (3955 - 3956), and other narrators, from Abu Ishaq with the same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These narrators did not mention in it that the two of them (al-Bara' and Ibn 'Umar) took part in the Battle of Uhud, and that is what is correct.
Important point: This position is also supported by the narration of 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Umar from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar (which the author (al-Hakim) will refer to later) in al-Bukhari (2664, 4097) and Muslim (1868), and by the narration of 'Abd Allah bin Dinar from Ibn 'Umar in al-Bukhari (4107). According to these narrations the first battle of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was "the Trench", and al-Bara' and Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) were born in the same year.
