It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) twice in a single day.
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. And at the beginning of this chapter I have mentioned his pledge of allegiance at the age of eight, and that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled at (his boldness) and expressed wonder.

Explanation & Benefits

1/ 173. Grading: Its chain is "da'if" because of a break (inqita') in it. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator from 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) here is his grandson "Nafi' bin Thabit bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr", who did not live in his grandfather's time but was born years after him. Note / Clarification: Nafi' bin Thabit is "salih al-hadith" (see al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil 8/ 457 and Tarikh al-Islam 4/ 239). He had two sons, both named "'Abd Allah bin Nafi'"; one is called al-Asghar (the younger) and the other al-Akbar (the elder). Al-Asghar also narrated from his elder brother al-Akbar, as mentioned in al-Hazimi's "al-Faysal" 1/ 173. Reference / Source: al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14832), Abu Musa al-Madini in "al-Lata'if" (798) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" 9/ (307), via two routes, those of 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Baghawi and Buhlul bin Ishaq, both from Ibrahim bin Hamzah with this same chain. Reference / Source: al-Diya' al-Maqdisi also narrated it (308) via 'Ali bin al-Saqr al-Sukkari. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Of 'Ali bin al-Saqr, Imam al-Daraqutni said in "Su'alat al-Hakim" that he is "not strong". In this chain it runs from 'Abd Allah bin Nafi' bin Thabit, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr.
Grading: Imam al-Dhahabi declared it "munkar" in his "Talkhis", and said that the brother of al-Zubayri is unknown (majhul).
