Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6481

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both): I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever recites the Qur'an, whether from memory or by looking at it, will be given a tree in Paradise such that if a crow were to hatch a chick beneath one of its leaves, and that chick then began to fly, it would grow old before it covered the distance of that leaf."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "extremely weak" (da'if bi-marrah), because of the narrator Muhammad bin Bahr al-Hujaymi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): al-'Uqayli described him in "al-Du'afa'" as "munkar al-hadith (narrator of objectionable reports), making many errors". Ibn Hibban wrote in "al-Majruhin" that "using him as proof has fallen away". Imam al-Dhahabi declared him "munkar al-hadith" in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14857) and "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (3351) from Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Firyabi with this same chain.
Reference / Source: al-'Uqayli narrated it in "al-Du'afa'" (1522) and Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" 3/ 398, and via Ibn 'Adi Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1849), through two routes from Muhammad bin Bahr, with the same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The first part of this narration (without the words "If a crow … etc.") was narrated by al-Bazzar (2191) via Nafi' bin 'Umar al-Jumahi, and by Ibn 'Adi 6/ 221 and Abu Nu'aym in "Akhbar Asbahan" 1/ 47 via Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr; both of them narrate from 'Abd Allah bin Abi Mulaykah.
Grading: Both of these routes are "da'if" and not authentic, and of the two the route of al-Bazzar is the weakest (wahin).
