It is narrated from Abu Nawfal bin Abi Aqrab al-Urayji that al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf crucified Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the mountain pass (Aqabah) of Madinah so that the people of Quraysh could see it. When people passed by there, they would not stop, until Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by, and he stopped and said three times: "Peace be upon you, O Abu Hubayb." Then he said three times: "I had forbidden you from this." Then he said: "By Allah, you were one who fasted much, stood in prayer at night and upheld the ties of kinship." The narrator says: When al-Hajjaj was informed that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) had stood there, he had his blessed body taken down from there and thrown into the graveyard of the Jews. Then he sent word to Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) that she should come to him, and she had lost her sight. She refused to come. So al-Hajjaj sent word: "You will certainly come, or else I will send someone who will drag you by your braids." She said: "By Allah, I will never come to you until you send someone who drags me to you by my braids." When his messenger went and told him this, he said: "O boy, bring me my leather sandals." He put on the sandals and, full of rage, came to her and said: "Have you seen what Allah has done to the enemy of Allah?" She replied: "I saw that you ruined his world and he ruined your Hereafter. As for your taunting him by calling him (the son of) 'Dhat al-Nitaqayn' (the one with the two waistbands), yes! I had just two waistbands: one with which I used to cover the food of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to protect it from ants, and the other, which women cannot do without. And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'In the tribe of Thaqif there will be a great liar and a destroyer (a bloodthirsty tyrant).' As for the liar, we have seen him; and as for the destroyer, that is you." The narrator says: On hearing this, al-Hajjaj left from there.
The reports are authentically established that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) heard hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and, at the age of eight, used to come and go in his (peace and blessings be upon him) presence. I will mention those accounts of his which indicate this, for the hadiths narrated in his Musnad from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) number seventy-odd.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts and al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" have it thus (li-yukhziya), but "Mashyakhat Ibn Shadhan" has in its place "li-yu'dhiya" ("so as to harm"), which seems more correct in view of the context.
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this passage appears (undotted) as "fa-amma an yfrwa fa-ja'alu", while the correct wording given in the text is taken from "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" and "al-Mashyakhah".
2/ 706. Important point: This refers to "al-Mukhtar bin Abi 'Ubayd al-Thaqafi", who claimed that revelation came to him. Reference / Source: See Imam al-Dhahabi's "Tarikh al-Islam", volume 2, page 706.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain, 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz is Abu al-Hasan al-Baghawi, and Muslim bin Ibrahim is Muslim bin Ibrahim al-Farahidi al-Basri. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14814) and Ibn Shadhan in his "al-Mashyakhah al-Sughra" (30), via 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Muslim narrated a similar version in his "Sahih" (2545) via Ya'qub bin Ishaq al-Hadrami, from al-Aswad bin Shayban, with the same chain (bihi). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated it in abridged form in his "Musnad" 44 / (26974) via Harun bin 'Antarah, from his father ('Antarah bin 'Abd al-Rahman), who said: "When al-Hajjaj killed Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him)", and then he mentioned the account. Important point: This whole story will come later with the author (al-Hakim) under number (8815), from the hadith of Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji.
