حدثنا إسماعيل بن محمد بن الفضل، حدثنا جدِّي، حدثنا سُنَيد بن داود، حدثنا محمد بن فُضَيل، حدثني أَجلحُ بن عبد الله، عن أبي الزُّبير قال: شَهِدتُ جَنازَة عبد الله بن عبّاس بالطائف، فرأيت طيرًا أبيضَ جاء حتى دخل تحتَ الثوب، فلم يُرَ خَرَجَ بعدُ (2).

Abu al-Zubayr narrates: I attended the funeral of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Ta'if. I saw a white bird come and enter beneath the cloth of his shroud, and then it was not seen coming out from there.

(2) إسناده حسن، وهذه القضية متواترة كما قال الذهبي في "السير" 3/ 358.
Grading: Its chain is hasan, and as Imam al-Dhahabi said in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (3/ 358), this incident has the status of "mutawatir" (mass-transmitted).
وأخرجه عبد الله بن أحمد في "فضائل الصحابة" (1908)، والآجري في "الشريعة" (1759) من طريق أبي هشام الرفاعي، عن محمد بن فضيل به.
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1908) and al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1759) through Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i, from Muhammad bin Fudayl.
وروى خبر الطائر الأبيض هذا أيضًا سعيدُ بن جبير، وهو الخبر التالي عند المصنف.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This report of the white bird was also narrated by Sa'id bin Jubayr, and it is the very next narration with the author (al-Hakim).
وعبد الله بن يامين عن أبيه عند البخاري في "تاريخه" 5/ 234، ويعقوب بن سفيان في "تاريخه" 1/ 539، وعبد الله بن أحمد (1907)، والطبراني (10582).
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Yamin narrated it from his father, and it is found in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh" (5/ 234), Ya'qub bin Sufyan's "al-Tarikh" (1/ 539), 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad (1907) and al-Tabarani (10582).
وعبيد بن جبير عند البخاري في "تاريخه" 5/ 445.

وشعيب بن يَسَار مولى ابن عبّاس عند ابن أبي شَيْبة 12/ 110، وعنه ابن أبي عاصم في "الآحاد والمثاني" (385).
Reference / Source: The narration of Shu'ayb bin Yasar, the freed slave (mawla) of Ibn 'Abbas, is found in Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 110) and Ibn Abi 'Asim (385).
وذكر بعض رواة هذا الخبر: أنهم كانوا يرون أنه عِلمُه.
Note / Clarification: Some narrators of this report mentioned that people thought that it (the bird) was in fact his knowledge (which had departed).
