It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Khosrow (Kisra) gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a mule as a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) rode it with a bridle made of a rope of hair, and seated me behind him. Then, after travelling for a while, he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me and said: "O boy!" I said: Labbayk, O Messenger of Allah (here I am). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Guard the commands of Allah, and Allah will guard you. Observe the rights of Allah, and you will find Him before you. Know Allah in times of ease, and He will know you in times of hardship. When you ask, ask Allah alone, and when you seek help, seek help from Allah alone. The Pen has written everything that is to happen and has dried. So if all the people wanted to bring you a benefit that Allah has not decreed for you, they would not be able to do it; and if all the people wanted to bring you a harm that Allah has not written against you, they would not be able to do it. So if you are able to act with patience together with certainty, then do so; and if you are not able, then be patient, for in being patient over what you dislike there is great good. And know that victory comes with patience, and know that relief comes with distress, and know that with every hardship there is ease."
This is a great hadith with a high (short) chain from the narration of Abd al-Malik bin Umayr from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), except that the two Shaykhs did not narrate from Shihab bin Khirash or al-Qaddah in their Sahihs; and this hadith is also narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) through other chains.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The chain contains 'Abd Allah bin Maymun al-Qaddah, who is "matruk" (abandoned) and "dhahib al-hadith" (his hadith is lost). Imam al-Dhahabi pointed to this as its defect, and also said that, in his view, 'Abd al-Malik (bin 'Umayr) did not hear from Ibn 'Abbas. Reference / Source: al-Wahidi in "al-Wasit" (2/ 257-258) and al-Baghawi in his "Tafsir" (3/ 132-133) narrated it through Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Shahin in "al-Afrad" (85), al-Khil'i in "al-Khil'iyyat" (221), Ibn Mandah in "Asami Ardaf al-Nabi (peace and blessings be upon him)" (p. 24) and al-Shajari in "al-Amali" (2/ 189) narrated it through two routes from Ahmad bin Shayban al-Ramli. Note / Clarification: al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar writes in "Muwafaqat al-Khubr al-Khabar" (1/ 329): "This hadith is gharib through this route." According to al-Daraqutni, Shihab bin Khirash is alone in narrating it from 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Umayr, and only 'Abd Allah bin Maymun narrated it from him. Grading: Considering all its routes together, this hadith is "qawi" (strong). Details of the narration: It is narrated from Ibn 'Abbas through various chains; Imam Ahmad (5/ 2803) and al-Tirmidhi (2516) narrated it through the route of Qays bin al-Hajjaj, from Hanash al-San'ani. Important point: At the end of Ahmad's narration (not in al-Tirmidhi's) there is this addition: "Know that there is much good in patience over what you dislike, that help comes with patience, that relief comes with distress, and that indeed with hardship comes ease." This chain is "hasan" because of Qays bin al-Hajjaj, and it is the most authentic of all the routes of this hadith.
