(1). Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr narrates that once Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was holding Ibn Abbas's (may Allah be pleased with them both) hand. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I see that the Qur'an has become very widespread among the people." I said: "O Commander of the Believers, I do not like that." The narrator says: He pulled his hand away from mine and asked: "Why?" I said: "Because when they recite it abundantly, they will rush ahead (hastily, without understanding); and when they show haste, they will differ among themselves; and when they differ, they will strike one another's necks." The narrator says: He left me and kept away from me, and that day passed over me (in fear and anxiety) in a way that only Allah knows. Then at the time of Zuhr his messenger came and said: "Answer the summons of the Commander of the Believers." I came to him, and he asked me: "What was it you said?" I again said: "O Commander of the Believers, I do not like that, because when they recite (the Qur'an) abundantly, they will be hasty; and when they are hasty, they will differ; and when they differ, they will strike one another's necks." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, I too had been concealing this from the people (that is, the same fear was in my heart)."

Explanation & Benefits

6/ 432. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here the name "Sukayn bin 'Abd al-'Aziz" has been written by mistake; the correct name is "Sukayn bin Yazid", who narrates from 'Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd and from whom 'Abd al-Warith narrates. His kunyah is Abu Qabisah. For details, see al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/ 199), Muslim's "al-Kuna wa-l-Asma'" (2813), al-Dulabi's "al-Kuna wa-l-Asma'" (3/ 923) and Ibn Hibban's "al-Thiqat" (6/ 432).
Grading: The basis of the report is sahih, as in the previous one, but this chain is "munqati'" (broken), since 'Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd did not live in the time of 'Umar. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The most likely view is that he heard it from Ibn 'Abbas, since his meeting him and narrating from him is established. Also, the narrator "Sukayn" is not well known.
