أخبرني أبو عبد الله الصَّفّار، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق القاضي، حدثنا ابن نُمَير، حدثنا ابن أبي عُبَيدة، حدثني أبي، عن الأعمش، عن أبي صالح، عن ابن عبّاس قال: كنت قاعدًا عند عمر بن الخطَّاب إذْ جاءَه كتابٌ: أنَّ أهل الكوفة قد قرأَ منهم القرآنَ كذا وكذا، فكَبَّر ﵀، فقلت: اختَلَفوا؟ فقال: أُفٍّ، وما يُدريك؟ قال: فغَضِبتُ، فأَتيتُ المنزل، قال: فأَرسل إليَّ بعد ذلك فاعتَلَلْتُ له، فقال: عَزَمتُ عليك إلّا جئتَ، فأتيتُه، فقال: كنتَ قلتَ شيئًا، قلت: أستغفرُ الله، لا أعودُ إلى شيء بعدها، فقال: عَزَمتُ عليكَ إِلّا أعدتَ عليَّ الذي قلت، [قلتُ]: قلت: كُتِبَ إليَّ أنه قد قرأَ القرآنَ كذا وكذا، فقلتُ: اختَلَفوا، قال: ومن قِبَل أي شيءٍ عرفتَ؟ قلتُ: قرأتُ: ﴿وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يُعْجِبُكَ قَوْلُهُ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيُشْهِدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا فِي قَلْبِهِ﴾ حتى انتهيتُ إلى ﴿وَاللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْفَسَادَ﴾ [البقرة: 204 - 205]، فإذا فعلوا ذلك لم يَصبِرْ صاحبُ القرآن، ثم قرأتُ: ﴿وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ أَخَذَتْهُ الْعِزَّةُ بِالْإِثْمِ فَحَسْبُهُ جَهَنَّمُ وَلَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ (206) وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ رَءُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ﴾ [البقرة: 206 - 207]، قال: صدقت والذي نفسي بيده (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when a letter came to him with the news that such-and-such a number of the people of Kufah had recited (memorised) the Qur'an. So he proclaimed the greatness of Allah (out of joy). I said: "Will they differ among themselves?" He said (with displeasure): "Shame! How would you know that?" Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I became angry (at his rebuke) and went home. Then a little later he sent for me, and I made an excuse, but he said: "I urge you strongly to come without fail." So I came to him, and he said: "You said something." I said: I seek forgiveness from Allah, and I will not say such a thing again. He said: "I insist that you repeat to me what you said." I said: (The letter) said that so many people had recited the Qur'an, and I said that they will differ. He asked: "On what basis did you come to know that?" I said: I have read this verse: "And among the people is he whose speech pleases you in the life of this world, and he calls Allah to witness what is in his heart", until I reached the verse: "And Allah does not love corruption." [Surah al-Baqarah: 204 - 205] So when they (the hypocrites) do that, the person of the Qur'an (the sincere believer) will not be able to keep silent. Then I recited these verses: "And when it is said to him, 'Fear Allah', his pride drives him to sin. So Hell is sufficient for him, and what an evil resting place it is. And among the people is he who sells himself seeking the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is Most Kind to His servants." [Surah al-Baqarah: 206 - 207] Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have spoken the truth, by the One in whose Hand is my soul (this is indeed the reality)."

وأخبرنا أبو عبد الله الصَّفّار، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق، حدثنا إبراهيم ابن الحَجّاج السَّامي، حدثنا عبد الوارث بن سعيد حدثنا أبو قَبِيصة سُكَين بن عبد العزيز (2) المُجاشعي، حدثني عبد الله بن عُبَيد بن عُمير قال: بينما ابنُ عبّاس مع عمر وهو آخذٌ بيده، فقال عمر: أَرى القرآنَ قد ظَهَرَ في الناس، فقلت: ما أُحِبُّ ذاكَ يا أمير المؤمنين، قال: فاجتَذَبَ يدَه من يدي وقال: لِمَ؟ قلتُ: لأنهم متى يَقرؤوا يَنفِروا، ومتى ما يَنفِروا يختلفوا، ومتى ما يختلفوا يضربْ بعضُهم رِقابَ بعض، فقال: فحُبِسَ عني وتَرَكني، فظَلِلتُ بيومٍ لا يعلمُه إلَّا الله، ثم أَتاني رسولُه عند الظُّهر فقال: أَجِبْ أميرَ المؤمنين، قال: فأتيتُه، فقال لي: كيف قلتَ؟ قلتُ: ما أحبُّ ذاك يا أمير المؤمنين، إنهم متى ما يقرؤُوا يَنفروا، ومتى ما يَنفِرُوا اختلفوا، ومتى ما يَختلِفوا يضربْ بعضُهم رقابَ بعض، فقال عمر: إن كنتُ لأكاتمُها الناسَ (1).

Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr narrates that once Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was holding Ibn Abbas's (may Allah be pleased with them both) hand. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I see that the Qur'an has become very widespread among the people." I said: "O Commander of the Believers, I do not like that." The narrator says: He pulled his hand away from mine and asked: "Why?" I said: "Because when they recite it abundantly, they will rush ahead (hastily, without understanding); and when they show haste, they will differ among themselves; and when they differ, they will strike one another's necks." The narrator says: He left me and kept away from me, and that day passed over me (in fear and anxiety) in a way that only Allah knows. Then at the time of Zuhr his messenger came and said: "Answer the summons of the Commander of the Believers." I came to him, and he asked me: "What was it you said?" I again said: "O Commander of the Believers, I do not like that, because when they recite (the Qur'an) abundantly, they will be hasty; and when they are hasty, they will differ; and when they differ, they will strike one another's necks." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, I too had been concealing this from the people (that is, the same fear was in my heart)."
