It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to ask me scholarly questions in the presence of the other eminent Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him (objecting): "You ask him questions, while we too have sons like him (meaning he is still young)?" At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He is of those whose scholarly standing you know well." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them all about this saying of Allah Almighty: "When the help of Allah and the victory come" [Surah al-Nasr: 1]. I said: "It refers to the approach of the time of the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (which is announced in this surah)," and I recited the whole surah up to "Indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I know nothing more about this surah than what you know."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Abu Dawud refers to Sulayman bin Dawud al-Tayalisi, and Abu Bishr refers to Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah. Reference / Source: al-Tirmidhi (3362) narrated it via 'Abd bin Humayd from Sulayman bin Dawud alone, and declared it "hasan sahih". Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (3627, 4430) and al-Tirmidhi (3362, repeated) narrated it through two routes from Shu'bah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim's including it (in the Mustadrak) is an oversight on his part, since it is in al-Bukhari. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (5/ 3127) and al-Bukhari (4294, 4970) narrated it through two routes from Abu Bishr. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam al-Bukhari (4969) and al-Nasa'i (7040, 11647) narrated it with a similar meaning through two routes from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
