أخبرنا أبو عبد الله الصَّفّار، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق القاضي، حدثنا إبراهيم بن الحَجّاج، حدثنا عبد الوارث بن سعيد، حدثنا أيوب السَّخْتِياني، عن عِكْرمة: أنَّ ناسًا ارتدُّوا على عهد عليٍّ فأحرَقَهم بالنار، فبلغ ذلك ابن عبّاس، فقال: لو كنتُ أنا كنتُ قاتِلَهم، لقول رسول الله ﷺ: "من بدَّلَ دينَه فاقتُلوه"، ولم أكن أُحرِّقُهم، لأني سمعتُ رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "لا تُعذِّبوا بعذابِ الله". فبلغ ذلك عليًّا فقال: وَيْحَ ابنِ عبّاس (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط البخاري، ولم يُخرجاه!

It is narrated from Ikrimah that during the time of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) some people apostatised, and he burned them with fire. When this news reached Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: "If I had been in his place, I would have killed them (with the sword), because of the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Whoever changes his religion, kill him,' and I would never have burned them with fire, because I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Do not punish with the punishment of Allah (fire).'" When this was conveyed to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said (marvelling at the insight of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)): "May good come to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) (or: Ibn Abbas has spoken the truth)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

وأخرجه أحمد 3/ (1871) و 4 / (2551) و (2552)، والبخاري (3017) و (6922)، وأبو داود (4351)، والترمذي، (1458)، والنسائي (3509)، وابن حبان (5606) من طرق عن أيوب السختياني، عن عِكْرمة به. فاستدراك الحاكم له ذهولٌ منه.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (3/ 1871, 4/ 2551, 2552), al-Bukhari (3017, 6922), Abu Dawud (4351), al-Tirmidhi (1458), al-Nasa'i (3509) and Ibn Hibban (5606) narrated it via Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani from 'Ikrimah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim's including it in the Mustadrak is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part, since it is already present in the Sahih collections.
وأخرج أحمد 5/ (2966)، والنسائي (3514) من طريق قتادة، عن أنس بن مالك: أنَّ عليًا أتي بأناس … فذكر نحوه مختصرًا.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad (5/ 2966) and al-Nasa'i (3514) narrated through the route of Qatadah from Anas bin Malik that some people were brought to 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and then a similar narration is mentioned in abridged form.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
