Mustadrak al-Hakim 6421 — Abdullah bin Abbas saw Jibril in the house

حدثنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب الشَّيباني، حدثنا إبراهيم بن عبد الله، حدثنا أبو عاصم، حدثنا شَبِيب بن بِشْر، حدثنا عِكْرمة، عن ابن عبّاس قال: دخل رسول الله ﷺ المَخرَجَ ثم خرج، فإذا تَوْرٌ مغطًّى، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: "مَن صَنَعَ هذا؟ " قلت: أنا، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: "اللهمَّ علِّمْه تأويلَ القرآن" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went into the toilet, and when he came out he found a covered vessel of water (for ablution) there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who placed this here?" I said: I did. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahumma 'allimhu ta'wil al-Qur'an' (O Allah, grant him knowledge of the interpretation of the Qur'an).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) إسناده حسن إن شاء الله من أجل شبيب بن بشر، وليّنه الذهبي في "التلخيص". إبراهيم ابن عبد الله: هو ابن يزيد السعدي الحافظ، وأبو عاصم هو الضحاك بن مخلد النبيل.
Grading: God willing, this chain is "hasan" because of Shabib bin Bishr, although al-Dhahabi made some criticism (lin, softness) of him in "al-Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain, "Ibrahim bin 'Abd Allah" refers to Ibn Yazid al-Sa'di al-Hafiz, and "Abu 'Asim" refers to al-Dahhak bin Makhlad al-Nabil.
وأخرجه ابن أبي عاصم في "الآحاد والمثاني" (382)، والبزار (2674 - كشف الأستار)، والطبراني (12022)، والضياء في "المختارة" 12 / (117) من طرق عن أبي عاصم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim (382), al-Bazzar (Kashf al-Astar: 2674), al-Tabarani (12022) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (12/ 117) narrated it through various routes from Abu 'Asim al-Nabil, with this same chain.
وروى دعاء النبي ﷺ لابن عبّاس خالدٌ الحذاء عن عكرمة واختلف عليه في لفظه، فمنهم من قال فيه: "اللهم علِّمه الكتاب" كما عند أحمد 5 / (3379)، والبخاري (75) و (7270)، ومنهم من قال فيه: "اللهم علِّمه الحكمة كما عند أحمد 3/ (1840)، والبخاري (3756)، وابن ماجه (166)، والترمذي (3824)، والنسائي (8123)، وابن حبان (7054)، زاد ابن ماجه في روايته "وتأويل الكتاب".
Details of the narration: Khalid al-Hadhdha' narrated from 'Ikrimah the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Ibn 'Abbas, and there is a difference in its wording: some reported "Allahumma 'allimhu al-Kitab" (O Allah, teach him the Book) (Ahmad 5/ 3379, al-Bukhari 75, 7270), and some reported "Allahumma 'allimhu al-hikmah" (O Allah, teach him wisdom) (Ahmad 3/ 1840, al-Bukhari 3756, Ibn Majah 166, al-Tirmidhi 3824, al-Nasa'i 8123, Ibn Hibban 7054). Ibn Majah's narration adds the words "and the interpretation of the Book".
وروي حسين بن عبد الله بن عبيد الله بن عبّاس - وفيه ضعفٌ - عن عِكْرمة عن ابن عبّاس، أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ قال: "اللهم أعط ابن عبّاس الحكمة، وعلِّمه التأويل". أخرجه أحمد 4/ (2422).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Husayn bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd Allah (who is weak) narrated from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, grant Ibn 'Abbas wisdom and teach him interpretation."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (4/ 2422).
