It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). I placed water for his (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution. Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) told him (peace and blessings be upon him) that Abdullah bin Abbas had placed the water for him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahumma faqqihhu fi al-din wa 'allimhu al-ta'wil' (O Allah, grant him understanding of the religion and teach him the interpretation (of the Qur'an)).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "qawi", on account of the presence of Abd Allah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Salamah mentioned in the chain refers to Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it in his "Sahih" (number 7055) via the route of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, from Sulayman bin Harb, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad also narrated it in the Musnad (5/ 3032 and 3102) through two other routes from Hammad bin Salamah. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (4/ 2397) narrated it via the route of Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah (Abu Khaythamah) from Ibn Khuthaym. Also, a narration with the same meaning was reported by Ahmad (3022), al-Bukhari (143), Muslim (2477), al-Nasa'i (8121) and Ibn Hibban (7053) through 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Yazid from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for him: "O Allah, give him understanding"; while al-Bukhari's wording adds "(understanding) of the religion". Details of the narration: 'Ikrimah narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) embraced me to his chest and said: "O Allah, teach him the Book (the Qur'an)" (Ahmad 5/ 3379, al-Bukhari 75). According to another narration of 'Ikrimah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for him for "wisdom" (Musnad Ahmad 3/ 1840, al-Bukhari 3756). According to a third narration, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, teach him the interpretation of the Qur'an" (this will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number 6421). General principle: "Ta'wil" means the ta'wil of the Qur'an, i.e. its tafsir and the explanation and clarification of its meanings.
