It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the last part of the night while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying. I stood behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of me and made me stand beside him. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his attention to his prayer, I stepped back. When he finished the prayer, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with you? I make you stand beside me and you step back?" I said: It is not fitting for anyone to stand beside you in prayer when you are the Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) liked what I said, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed to Allah to increase me in understanding and knowledge.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Kurayb" in the chain refers to Kurayb bin Abi Muslim, the mawla (freed slave) of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in the Musnad (5/ 3060) via the route of Abd Allah bin Bakr al-Sahmi, from Hatim bin Abi Saghirah, with this same chain. Note / Clarification: The word used in the narration, "inkhanastu", has the linguistic and technical meaning "I stepped back" or "I held back".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: According to Imam al-Hakim, the origin of this story is in the two Sahihs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) in a wording other than this: in Sahih al-Bukhari (138, 859) and Sahih Muslim (763, 186) via the route of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and in al-Bukhari (726) via the route of Dawud al-'Attar; both of them narrate from 'Amr bin Dinar.
