It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the most compassionate of my Ummah is Abu Bakr, the firmest in the matter of Allah is Umar, the most modest is Uthman, the best reciter is Ubayy bin Ka'b, the greatest expert in the laws of inheritance is Zayd bin Thabit, the best judge is Ali bin Abi Talib, the most knowledgeable about the lawful and the unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal, the most truthful in speech is Abu Dharr, the trustworthy one of this Ummah is Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah, and the great scholar of this Ummah is Abdullah bin Abbas."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is how it (the name) appears in the manuscripts available to us; however, Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (6/ 76) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (50/ 264) gave his kunyah as "Abu Mukhallad".
Grading: Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is the narrator "Kawthar bin Hakim", who is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith). Imam al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" called him "saqit" (discarded), naming him as the defect of the narration. Also, the narrator from him, Muhammad bin Yazid al-Rahawi, is not strong. Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (6/ 77), al-Daraqutni in the fifth part of "al-Fawa'id al-Muntaqah" of Ibn Ma'ruf (4) and al-Mustaghfiri in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (374) narrated it through the route of Abu Farwah Yazid bin Muhammad bin Yazid bin Sinan, from his father, with this same chain; but they made it a narration of Ibn 'Umar, which he reports from his father 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was narrated in abridged form by al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1479), Ibn Shadhan in "al-Mashyakhah al-Sughra" (49), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 65) and Ibn 'Asakir (7/ 328 and 39/ 96) through the route of Hushaym from Kawthar bin Hakim, as a hadith of Ibn 'Umar. Abu Ya'la (5763) narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Baylamani, from his father, from Ibn 'Umar, without mentioning Abu Dharr or Ibn 'Abbas; and this chain is "extremely weak" because of Ibn al-Baylamani. (5894). Note / Clarification: On this topic there are narrations from several other Companions, but none of them mentions Ibn 'Abbas. None of them is authentic except the narration of Anas bin Malik, which is in Musnad Ahmad (20/ 12904 and 21/ 13990) and elsewhere, and which has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) at number 5894.
