It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you permit me to write down everything I hear from you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." I said: Shall I write in (both states of) pleasure and anger? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, for it is not fitting that I should say anything but the truth, whether in pleasure or in anger."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", although this chain of it is "da'if" because of Muhammad bin Maslamah (Abu Ja'far al-Wasiti), Technical note / Defect ('illah): but Muhammad bin Maslamah has corroboration (a supporting narration). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in his "Musnad" 11/ (1930) via the route of Yazid bin Harun with this same chain, and in it Muhammad bin Yazid al-Kala'i is also mentioned (alongside Muhammad bin Maslamah) as support. (363). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Muhammad bin Ishaq is a "mudallis" and has narrated here with "'an", he too has been corroborated in the earlier hadith number (363) with the author (al-Hakim).
