Al-Akhnas bin Khalifah al-Dabbi states that Ka'b al-Ahbar saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) giving legal rulings to the people and asked: Who is this? The people told him: This is Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As. So Ka'b sent one of his companions to him and said: Go and tell him: O Abdullah bin Amr! Do not invent a lie against Allah, or He will destroy you with a punishment, for "he who invents (a lie) has certainly failed" [Surah Ta-Ha: 61]. The man came to him and said the same thing, and Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Ka'b has spoken the truth; he who invents a lie has indeed failed. And he did not become angry at all (on hearing this). Then Ka'b sent the same man to him again and said: Ask him what the Gathering (al-Hashr) is, where the souls of the Muslims gather, and where the souls of the idolaters gather. The man came and asked him, and Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: As for the souls of the Muslims, they gather at Ariha (Jericho); the souls of the idolaters gather at San'a; and as for the beginning of the Gathering, it is a fire that will drive the people along; they will see it at night and will not see it by day. Ka'b's messenger went back and informed him, and Ka'b said: He has spoken the truth. He is a great scholar, so ask him your questions.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" because al-Akhnas bin Khalifah al-Dabbi is majhul and not known. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among the other narrators of the chain, Yahya bin Yahya refers to "al-Naysaburi", Jarir to "Ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Dabbi" and 'Umarah to "Ibn al-Qa'qa' bin Shubrumah al-Dabbi". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" that al-Akhnas is a senior Tabi'i whom Imam al-Bukhari included in "al-Du'afa'", while Abu Hatim and others declared him reliable. We (the editors) say that Imam al-Dhahabi made this al-Akhnas and the narrator who narrates from Ibn Mas'ud, and from whom his son Bukayr narrates, one and the same person; whereas the one whom Imam al-Bukhari included in "al-Du'afa'" and whom Abu Hatim declared reliable is the other narrator (the father of Bukayr). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned him with doubt in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib", saying: "Perhaps he is the same one". In any case, in both scenarios this narrator is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition). Reference / Source: Al-Mizzi indicated in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" 2/ 296, under the biography of al-Akhnas, that Imam Ibn Majah narrated this report in his "Tafsir". Important point: As for the "fire of the Gathering" (nar al-hashr), it will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8620) through another route from Abd Allah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), in which it is mentioned that: "When they (the people) took their midday rest, it (the fire) also stopped, and when they spent the night, it also stopped". We will mention its marfu' supporting reports there, whose apparent meaning is that those people will see it day and night.
