Abbad bin Tamim states that when the time of al-Harrah came, a man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "This is Ibn Hanzalah taking the pledge of allegiance from people to fight until death." He replied: "After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I will not pledge allegiance to anyone on this (death)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Identification of names: Muhammad bin Ghalib is al-Hafiz Tamtam, Wuhayb is Ibn Khalid bin 'Ajlan, and 'Amr bin Yahya is Ibn 'Umarah al-Ansari.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (26/ 16471), al-Bukhari (2959) and Muslim (1861) narrated it through various routes from Wuhayb bin Khalid with this same chain.
Important point: Imam al-Hakim's including it (in al-Mustadrak) as meeting the condition of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) is an oversight ("dhuhul") on his part, since it is already present in their books.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mu'ammal bin Isma'il (in Imam Ahmad's collection) differed by narrating it with the link "from his father", but Mu'ammal is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (4167) narrated it through the route of Sulayman bin Bilal from 'Amr bin Yahya from 'Abbad bin Tamim.
Identification of names: Ibn Hanzalah is 'Abd Allah bin Hanzalah al-Ansari.
Note / Clarification: His father Hanzalah is famous as "Ghasil al-Mala'ikah" (the one washed by the angels), who was martyred at Uhud in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity). 'Abd Allah bin Hanzalah was martyred on the day of the Battle of al-Harrah in 63 AH; on that day the Ansar had pledged allegiance to him.
