Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Sayyiduna Safwan bin al-Mu'attal (may Allah be pleased with him) attacked Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and struck him with a sword, and while striking him he recited these verses: "Taste the edge of my sword, for I am a young man who, though no poet, knows how to defend my honour when (slander) is cast upon me; and I take my revenge on the slanderer who accuses the chaste and innocent." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Safwan fled from there, and Hassan came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking redress. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him to forgive Safwan's blow, so he gave it up for the sake of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). In return, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a very large orchard of date palms and a Roman slave girl named Sirin. Later, Hassan sold that orchard to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) during his rule for a large sum.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to manuscript (B) and "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 30), the word is "ashtafi", which means "I will take revenge". In al-Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym the word "antaqim" occurs explicitly. The other manuscripts have "attaqi", which is most likely a corruption; the correct form is "ashtafi" or "antaqim".
Grading: Because of slight weakness ("lin") in Isma'il bin Abi Uways and his father 'Abd Allah, this chain may possibly be graded hasan ("tahsin"). Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (8/ 56) through the chain of Imam al-Hakim, but the two lines of poetry are not mentioned in it. Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" through Isma'il bin Ishaq al-Qadi. Reference / Source: Within the long narration of the story of the Ifk, al-Tabarani, al-Tha'labi, al-Hinna'i, Ibn 'Asakir and 'Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi narrated it through various routes from Isma'il bin Abi Uways.
