Mus'ab bin Abdullah narrates that Abu Usayd Malik bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 40 AH (the Year of Unity). He was the last of the people of Badr to die. He was among those who saw the angels on the day of Badr; later he lost his sight. He was the trustee (guardian) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) over his pure wives.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The phrase "and in the year of the Jama'ah ('Am al-Jama'ah), 40 AH" is in manuscripts (Z) and (B), while in (M) and (S) a blank space has been left here.
Important point: 'Allamah al-Dhahabi's calling it an error most likely refers to the point that he was not the last of the Companions who fought at Badr to die (since Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas died in 55 AH). However, 40 AH is indeed the correct year of his death, as al-Dhahabi himself stated explicitly.
