It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar (al-Waqidi) that Sayyiduna Mu'attib bin Awf bin Amir bin al-Fadl bin Afif (may Allah be pleased with him), who is called Mu'attib bin al-Hamra' and whose kunyah was Abu Awf, was an ally of Banu Makhzum and was among those who made the second emigration to Abyssinia. It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood (mu'akhat) between Mu'attib bin al-Hamra' and Tha'labah bin Hatib. He took part in the Battles of Badr, Uhud and the Trench (Khandaq) and in all the campaigns with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he passed away in the year 57 AH, when he was seventy-eight years old.
