Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6220

It is narrated from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri that when death approached Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), he called for an old woollen cloak and said: "Shroud me in it, for I faced the idolaters wearing it on the day of Badr, and I kept it hidden away for this very day (for my shroud)."

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name has been corrupted to 'al-'Anbari'.

Grading: This chain is 'munqati''.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abdullah bin Salih is 'hasan al-hadith', but Imam al-Zuhri did not live in the time of Sa'd. Al-Layth is al-Layth bin Sa'd and 'Uqayl is Ibn Khalid al-Ayli.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (316) and Ibn 'Asakir narrated it through two routes from 'Abdullah bin Salih with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (1033), and Ibn 'Asakir via Qutaybah bin Sa'id, through al-Layth bin Sa'd.
Note / Clarification: 'Al-khalaq' means an old or worn-out thing.
