أخبرني محمد بن المؤمَّل، حَدَّثَنَا الفضل بن محمد الشَّعْراني، حَدَّثَنَا نُعيم بن حمّاد، حَدَّثَنَا رِشْدِين، عن يونس، عن ابن شِهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيّب: أنَّ سعد بن أبي وقّاص كان يَخضِبُ بالسَّواد (1).

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye (his hair) black.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لضعف رشدين - وهو ابن سعد - ووهّاه به الذهبي في "تلخيصه" لكن ما قبله يشهد له وإن كان فيه الواقدي. يونس: هو ابن يزيد الأيلي.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Rishdin bin Sa'd is weak, and 'Allamah al-Dhahabi also declared it very weak (wahi) because of him in the 'Talkhis'; however, the previous narrations are a shahid for it. Yunus is Ibn Yazid al-Ayli.
ورواه الطبري (295) - وعنه أبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (520) - عن أحمد بن رشدين المصري، عن نعيم بن حماد بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (295) and Abu Nu'aym (520) narrated it in the same way with the chain of Nu'aym bin Hammad.
ورواه أبو نعيم أيضًا (520) من طريق قُتَيبة بن سعيد، عن رشدين بن سعد، به.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym (520) also narrated it via Qutaybah bin Sa'id from Rishdin bin Sa'd.
ورواه أيضًا (522) من طريق إبراهيم بن سعد الزهري، عن عبد العزيز بن المطلب، عن يونس، عن الزهري، ولم يذكر فيه ابن المسيب وإسناده إلى الزهري حسن.
Grading: Its chain up to al-Zuhri is 'hasan'.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym (522) narrated it with this chain, but Ibn al-Musayyab is not mentioned in it.
ورواه الطبراني (296) - وعنه أبو نعيم (521) - من طريق عبد الله بن عمر بن أبان مشكدانة، عن سليم بن مسلم، عن معمر، عن الزهري، عن عامر بن سعد: أنَّ سعدًا كان يخضب بالسواد.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (296) and Abu Nu'aym (521) narrated via Mushkudanah from Sulaym bin Muslim that Sa'd used black dye.
قال الهيثمي في "المجمع" 5/ 162: وفيه سليم بن مسلم، ولم أعرفه.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Haythami says in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (5/ 162) that it contains Sulaym bin Muslim, whom he does not know (that is, he is majhul (unknown)).
وسيأتي برقم (6224) عن مصعب الزبيري: أنَّ سعدًا كان يخضب بالسواد.
Note / Clarification: This narration from Mus'ab al-Zubayri, that Sa'd used black dye, will come later at number (6224).
