Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6206

Mujahid narrates from Sayyiduna Yazid bin Shajarah al-Rahawi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the commanders of Syria, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to appoint him to lead the armies. One day he addressed us and said: "O people! Remember the blessings of Allah upon you. If only you could see what I see (of lights and manifestations) in black, red, green and white, and see what (good and blessing) there is in these saddles! Indeed, when the prayer is established, the gates of the heaven, the gates of Paradise and the gates of Hell are opened, and the wide-eyed maidens (hur al-'in) are adorned and they look down (upon the battlefield). Then when one of you advances to fight, they supplicate: (O Allah!) Keep him firm, (O Allah!) Help him. And when he turns his back, they veil themselves from him and say: O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him. So fall upon the faces of the enemy, may my father and mother be ransomed for you! For when one of you advances (on the battlefield), as soon as the first drop of his blood falls, his sins fall away from him just as the leaves of a tree fall, and two of the wide-eyed maidens descend to him and wipe the dust from his face. He asks them: Since when have you been (waiting for me)? They say: No, rather you tell us since when you have been (on your way to us)? And he is clothed in a hundred robes such that if they were placed between these two fingers of mine, meaning the index finger and the middle finger, they would fit between them. They are not woven by human beings, but are from the garments of Paradise. Surely you are recorded with Allah by your names, your marks, your ornaments, your secret conversations and your gatherings. Then when the Day of Resurrection comes, it will be said: O so-and-so! This is your light; and O so-and-so! You have no light. And indeed Hell has a shore like the shore of the sea, in which there are venomous creatures and snakes like palm trees, and scorpions like mules. When the people of Hell cry out for relief (from the punishment), it will be said: Go out to that shore. So they will go out, and those harmful creatures will seize their lips and faces, and will keep them covered for as long as Allah wills. Then they will flee from them, seeking refuge back in the Fire. And itching will be set upon them until they scratch their skin so that the bone becomes visible. Then one of them will say to another: O so-and-so! Does this hurt you? He will say: Yes. Then he will say: This is because of how you used to hurt the believers."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It means: spend your utmost effort and strength in fighting them. Ibn al-Athir wrote this in "al-Nihayah".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this word is written "ana" (with an alif mamdudah), which gives the impression of the first-person pronoun ('I'), but the correct form is "ana" with an alif maqsurah, meaning "the time has come"; that is, the time has come for you to come to me.

Grading: Its chain up to Yazid bin Shajarah is sahih, and it is his own statement.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mansur is Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur" (562) via Sa'id bin 'Amir from Shu'bah with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (133) and "al-Jihad" (22) from Za'idah bin Qudamah; and 'Abd al-Razzaq (9538), Hannad in "al-Zuhd" (162) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (22/ 641) via Sufyan al-Thawri; both of them narrate from Mansur.
Details of the narration: All of them confined themselves to the first part only, except 'Abd al-Razzaq, who narrated it with both parts with some abridgement.
Reference / Source: The first part was narrated by Sa'id bin Mansur (2567), Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (5/ 301) and Hannad (161) via al-A'mash; while the second part was narrated by Husayn al-Marwazi in his additions to "Zuhd Ibn al-Mubarak" (1321) via Layth bin Abi Sulaym; both of them narrate from Mujahid.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yazid bin Abi Ziyad differed and, through Mujahid, narrated the story of advancing to fight and of the two houris as 'marfu'' (attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur (2564), Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (5/ 292) and "al-Musnad" (527), Hannad (158), 'Abd bin Humayd (441), al-Bazzar (1712, 1713), al-Tabarani (22/ 642) and Ibn Shahin (441) narrated it via Yazid.
Grading: This is Yazid al-Qurashi al-Hashimi, who is a da'if (weak) narrator with very poor memory.
Grading: This chain is 'da'if jiddan' (very weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-'Abbas bin al-Fadl and his teacher al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman are both weak and 'munkar al-hadith'.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it with this chain 'marfu'' in 'al-Mu'jam al-Kabir' (2203).
