Grading: This narration is sahih 'mawquf' (as the statement of a Companion or Tabi'i). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is very weak because of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Hamzah ('Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Ubaydullah); he is a narrator whose weakness is agreed upon. Only Isma'il bin 'Ayyash narrated from him, and one of the two made the mistake of mentioning that Yazid bin Shajarah heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whereas he is a Tabi'i. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mujahid narrated it from Yazid bin Shajarah, but there is disagreement about it; Shu'bah narrated it 'marfu'' (as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) (al-Ghaylaniyyat no. 637), but its chain contains Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi, who is 'matruk (abandoned)' and accused of lying. Grading: The most correct 'wajh' (version) of it is to regard it as 'mawquf' (the own statement of Yazid bin Shajarah). Reference / Source: Waki' bin al-Jarrah (Ibn Abi Shaybah 5/ 301), Abu Mu'awiyah (Sunan Sa'id bin Mansur 2567), Hannad (al-Zuhd 161) and Abu Nu'aym (Sifat al-Jannah 192) narrated it in the same way. Reference / Source: Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir narrated it from Mujahid; then Sufyan al-Thawri narrated it, in 'Abd al-Razzaq (9538), Hannad (162) and al-Tabarani (22/ 641), as the statement of Yazid bin Shajarah with the words "I have been informed that the swords", etc. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid differed in this and removed the name of Yazid bin Shajarah from the chain, but the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri is more correct. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The shahid for this meaning is the marfu' hadiths of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and 'Abdullah bin Abi Awfa, whose words are: "Paradise is under the shade of the swords." These have already passed with the author (al-Hakim) at numbers (2419) and (2445), and they are in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim.
