حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن إبراهيم بن الفضل المزكِّي، حَدَّثَنَا الحسين بن محمد بن زياد، حَدَّثَنَا الزُّبير بن بكّار، حدثني عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله الزُّهْري قال: قال معاويةُ بن أبي سفيان وعنده عبد الرحمن بن أزهرَ: من لي بمخرمةَ بن نوفل؟ [ما] (3) يَضعُني من لسانه تنقُّصًا، فقال له عبد الرحمن بن أزهر: أنا أكفِيكَه، فبلغ ذلك مخرمةَ، فقال: جعلني عبدُ الرحمن يتيمًا في حَجْره، يَزْعُم لمعاوية (4) أنه يَكفيهِ إِيَّاي! فقال له ابن البَرْصاء اللَّيثي: إنه عبد الرحمن بن أزهر، فرفع عصًا في يده وضربه فشجَّه وقال: أعدوُّنا (5) في الجاهلية وتَحسُدُنا في الإسلام وتدخلُ بيني وبين ابن الأزهر؟! (1)
It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah al-Zuhri that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them both), while Abd al-Rahman bin Azhar was with him, said: "Is there anyone who will deal with Makhramah bin Nawfal for me? For he keeps disparaging me with his tongue." Abd al-Rahman bin Azhar said: "I will deal with him for you." When this reached Sayyiduna Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "Has Abd al-Rahman taken me for an orphan under his guardianship, that he claims before Mu'awiyah that he will deal with me!" At this, Ibn al-Barsa' al-Laythi said to him that it was indeed Abd al-Rahman bin Azhar (who had said this). So Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) raised the stick he was holding and struck him (Ibn al-Barsa'), wounding his head, and said: "Were you our enemy in the time of Jahiliyyah, and now you envy us in Islam and interfere between me and Ibn al-Azhar?!"

(3) زيادة لا بدَّ منها من "تاريخ دمشق" 57/ 161 و "الإصابة" لابن حجر في ترجمة مخرمة، حيث ذكراه عن الزبير بن بكار.
Note / Clarification: This is a necessary addition taken from "Tarikh Dimashq" and Ibn Hajr's "al-Isabah" (biography of Makhramah), where they narrated it from al-Zubayr bin Bakkar.
(4) لفظ "لمعاوية" تحرّف في نسخنا الخطية إلى: بقوته. وجاء على الصواب في النسخة المحمودية كما في طبعة الميمان.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "li-Mu'awiyah" had been corrupted in our manuscripts to "bi-quwwatihi", while in the 'Mahmudiyyah manuscript' and the 'Mayman edition' it is correct (li-Mu'awiyah).
(5) هكذا في (ص) والنسخة المحمودية، وفي (ز) و (ب): أعدوانًا.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscript (S) and the Mahmudiyyah manuscript the text is like this, while in manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word is written "a'udwanan".
(1) إسناده معضل، فإنَّ عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله الزهري هذا لم يدرك زمن معاوية، وهو شيخ للزبير مجهول الحال، وذكره ابن حبان في "ثقاته" 7/ 83.
Grading: Its chain is 'mu'dal' (two or more consecutive narrators dropped from the chain).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah al-Zuhri did not live in the time of Mu'awiyah; he is a teacher of al-Zubayr bin Bakkar and is 'majhul al-hal' (of unknown condition).
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his book "al-Thiqat" (7/ 83).
