Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6182

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar that Sayyiduna Makhramah bin Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam at the time of the Conquest of Makkah. He was a great scholar of the genealogy and history of Quraysh, and he also had deep knowledge of the boundary markers of the Haram. A son, Safwan, was born to him, after whom his kunyah was Abu Safwan, and he was the eldest of his children.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
General principle: Ustadh 'Atiq al-Biladi explained in "Mu'jam al-Ma'alim al-Jughrafiyyah" (p. 33) that these are markers (ansab) built of plastered stones on the roads leading out of Makkah; outside them is 'hill' and inside them is 'haram'. These boundaries had continued from the time of Quraysh; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept them, and the Muslims preserved them for centuries.
