Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Khalid bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him). It is narrated from Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah and other scholars of hadith that at the time of the first emigration to Abyssinia, whose leader was Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), among Banu Asad bin Abd al-Uzza was Sayyiduna Khalid bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) (the brother of Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam). He passed away on the way, before reaching Abyssinia. Al-Mughirah bin Abd al-Rahman al-Asadi narrates from his father that this verse was revealed concerning him: "And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him (on the way), his reward has become incumbent upon Allah" [Surah al-Nisa': 100].
Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him). Imam Bukhari and Muslim have agreed (on recording the report) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I passed by Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam while he was reciting Surah al-Baqarah during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)" (the complete hadith).
Imam al-Hakim says that according to the arrangement of the book, Khalid bin Hizam should have been mentioned before Hakim and Hisham after them, but I have brought them together here so that it is easier for the reader to understand.
Now, mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who used to answer the satire of the idolaters on behalf of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the community of Muslims.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) the name is corrupted to "al-Zubayr"; the correction is from (S) and (M).

Note / Clarification: It is stated like this in "al-Mustadrak", but according to the other authentic reports of the Sirah this event belongs to the second migration to Abyssinia.

Important point: "Banu Umayyah" in the manuscripts is wrong; Khalid bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) belonged to "Banu Asad", not to Banu Umayyah.

Important point: In the manuscripts the addition of the word "bin" in "bin Khalid" is wrong, and in manuscript (Z) "'Abd al-'Uzza" has been written as "'Abd al-'Aziz", which is a corruption.

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Important point: According to the well-known view, the verse ﴿وَمَن يَخْرُجْ مِن بَيْتِهِ مُهَاجِرًا﴾ (And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant) was revealed about Jundub bin Damrah (may Allah be pleased with him), not about Khalid bin Hizam. Al-Baladhuri also rejected this report (athar).
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd and al-Zubayr bin Bakkar narrated it via al-Waqidi, that Khalid bin Hizam died on the way during the migration to Abyssinia from a snakebite, and this verse was revealed concerning him.
Reference / Source: Al-Baladhuri says that there is no agreement on his migration and Ibn Ishaq did not mention him, while al-Waqidi's statement that this verse was revealed about him is "not established".
Grading: According to Ibn Kathir this report is "extremely gharib (strange)".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Kathir says that this event is Makkan while the verse was revealed in Madinah; so it is possible that this event is included in the ruling of the verse, but it is not the "occasion of revelation" of the verse.
Details of the narration: Al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) said that nothing grieved him as much as the news of Khalid bin Hizam's death, because every emigrant of Quraysh had some relative with him, but from his own tribe (Banu Asad) there was no one besides him.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): An intermediary has dropped out of the manuscripts, which we have established from "the two Sahihs", because 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr did not live in the time of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so an intermediary in between is necessary.
