It is narrated from Khalifah bin Khayyat that Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), the mawla of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was originally from Yemen. He came as a captive of war, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) favoured him and set him free. His kunyah was Abu Abdullah, and he passed away in Egypt in 54 AH.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: It is in Khalifah bin Khayyat's "al-Tabaqat" (pp. 7, 191). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Khalifah is alone in mentioning that he died in Egypt, whereas according to other scholars (such as Ibn Sa'd) he died in Hims. For further detail see Ibn Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (11/169).
