It is narrated from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Isa that, among the accounts of Hims and of the Companions who settled there, is Thawban bin Jahdar (may Allah be pleased with him). His kunyah was Abu Abdullah and he belonged to the tribe of Alhan. He came as a captive, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set him free and said to him: "O Thawban, if you wish, join those to whom you belong, and then you will be one of them; and if you wish, stay here, and you will be one of us, the People of the House, under the wala' (the bond of loyalty and inheritance) of the Messenger of Allah." He said: Rather, I will remain under the wala' of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He passed away in Hims in 54 AH, during the governorship of Abdullah bin Qurt.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
5/ 433. Note / Clarification: This refers to "Tarikh al-Himsiyyin", as indicated in Ibn Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (5/433).
Important point: In the manuscripts this has been distorted to "Jahdab"; the correct name is "Thawban bin Jahdar" (on the pattern of Ja'far). Linguistically, jahdar and jahdab have the same meaning, namely "a short man".
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (S) has the word "biman".
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (S) has the word "ma'ana".
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (11/170, 172) narrated it via Muhammad bin al-Muzaffar, with this same chain. Grading: Ibn Isa mentioned it in his "Tarikh" from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal without a chain, and this narration is not sound.
