(6). It is narrated from Urwah bin al-Zubayr that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that they set out for Syria with some riders from the people of Makkah to obtain provisions. They came to a woman named Layla and saw her appearance and beauty. Then when Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, he was reciting these verses about her: "I remembered Layla while the land of al-Samawah still lay before me; so what has Layla, the daughter of al-Judi, to do with me, and what have I to do with her? And how did my heart come to seek a woman of Banu al-Harith who dwells in Busra or dwells in al-Ma'ati?" Then when the time of Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came and he conquered Syria, that woman was also among the captives the Muslims took. Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke to Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) about her, so he wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about the matter, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote back that the woman should be given to him (to Abd al-Rahman).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In the manuscripts the name here has been distorted to "Umayr"; it has been corrected in light of the biographical sources and the sources of takhrij.
Note / Clarification: Manuscripts (S) and (M) have "yatamarun", while the correct word is "yamtarun", meaning to bring grain or food; the word derives from "al-mirah". (See: al-Qamus al-Muhit.)
Important point: Manuscripts (S) and (M) have "dunana"; however, the correct word is the one found in manuscript (B) and in most books of literature and takhrij, while in some sources "baynana" also occurs.
Important point: The manuscripts have "a'ati", but the text has been corrected according to the sources of takhrij and the books of literature.
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (B) has "qiblah", and in manuscripts (S) and (M) it reads as "muqlah", which gives no meaning here; therefore the correct word has been established according to the other reliable sources.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah. Important point: Al-Humaydi is Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, and Sufyan is Ibn Uyaynah. Reference / Source: Al-Baghawi narrated it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (4/415), and through him Ibn Asakir, via Yahya bin Yahya al-Ghassani from Urwah bin al-Zubayr. Also, Ibn al-A'rabi transmitted it in his "Mu'jam" (927) through Ibrahim bin Hashim, from Urwah, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr. Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd and Ibn Zanjawayh narrated it in "al-Amwal", Ibn Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah", and Ibn Asakir, via Abdullah bin Awn from Yahya bin Yahya al-Ghassani, but Urwah bin al-Zubayr is not mentioned in it. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrations differ regarding this story of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): according to the narration of Hisham bin Urwah, the one who granted the spoil was Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), whereas in this narration of Yahya bin Yahya al-Ghassani the one who ordered it is said to be Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). There is also a difference within Yahya's own narration as to whether the commander of the army was Khalid bin al-Walid or Ya'la bin Munyah. Note / Clarification: Imam Abu Ubayd says: When I narrated this hadith of Yahya bin Yahya al-Ghassani (in which Abu Bakr is mentioned) to Abu Mushir al-Ghassani, he recognized it but clarified: "In fact, it was Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who granted him this spoil in Syria."
