Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6107

It is narrated from Mutarrif bin Abdullah that Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Mutarrif! Know that the angels used to greet me with peace at my head, near the house and near the door of the chamber. Then when I had myself cauterised (for treatment), that stopped." Then when his wound healed, he said: "O Mutarrif! Know that the state I was in before has returned to me. Keep this matter hidden on my behalf until I die."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This is a "sahih report" except for the words "at my head, at the House (the Ka'bah) and at the gate of the Hijr"; for Rawh bin Aslam is alone in narrating these words, and he is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Moreover, these words contain "nakarah" (objectionable content), since 'Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) did not reside in Makkah; rather, he lived in the land of his people, as has passed at number (6099), and then he moved to Basrah and died there.
Important point: Al-Husayn bin al-Qabbani refers to al-Husayn bin Muhammad bin Ziyad al-Qabbani, Hammad refers to Hammad bin Salamah, and Abu al-Tayyah refers to Yazid bin Humayd al-Duba'i.
Reference / Source: This narration was reported by Imam Ahmad (33/ 19833), Muslim (1226/ 167) and Ibn Hibban (3938) through the route of Humayd bin Hilal al-'Adawi, and also by Imam Ahmad (19841, 19842) and Muslim (1226/ 168) through the route of Qatadah bin Di'amah; both of them narrate it from Mutarrif with this same chain, but the specific wording referred to is not found in them.
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Nawawi said in "Sharh Muslim" that 'Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) suffered from haemorrhoids and bore their pain patiently; by the blessing of this patience the angels used to greet him with salam. Then, when he had himself cauterized (for treatment), their greeting stopped; then, when he gave up cauterization, the angels' greeting resumed.
