Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6102

Ibrahim bin Ata narrates from his father that Ziyad (or Ibn Ziyad) sent Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) as a collector of zakah. When he returned, he did not have even a single dirham with him (for the treasury). So he asked him: "Where is the wealth?" He replied: "Did you send me for (collecting) wealth? We collected it just as we used to collect it in the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we spent it in the very place where we used to spend it in the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: This chain is "hasan" on account of Ibrahim bin 'Ata' (Ibn Abi Maymunah).
Important point: Abu Qutaybah refers to Salm bin Qutaybah al-Sha'iri.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (1625) narrated it through the route of 'Ali bin Nasr al-Jahdami, and Ibn Majah (1811) through the route of Sahl bin Hammad; both of them transmit it from Ibrahim bin 'Ata' with this same chain.
