Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6101

It is narrated from Hilal bin Yasaf that he said: I went to Basrah and entered the mosque, and there was an elderly man leaning against a pillar narrating hadith. He was saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of people are those of my generation, then those who come after them following in their footsteps, then those who come after them. Then there will come people who will give testimony before they are asked to (give) testimony." I asked: "Who is this elderly man?" The people told me that he is Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him).
This hadith has a high (ali) chain and is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/ 19820), al-Tirmidhi (2221, 2302) and Ibn Hibban (7229) narrated it via Waki' bin al-Jarrah from Sulayman bin Mihran al-A'mash with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Muhammad bin Fudayl there is the addition of "'Ali bin Mudrik" between al-A'mash and Hilal bin Yasaf, which Imam al-Tirmidhi declared "gharib", and he called the narration of Waki' (which does not have this link) more authentic.
Grading: Although Abu Hatim and Ibn Abd al-Barr considered the addition of 'Ali bin Mudrik correct, in our view the statement of Imam al-Tirmidhi is more correct, namely that the hadith of al-A'mash does not contain the link of Ibn Mudrik, as we have explained in detail in our notes on the "Musnad Ahmad".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (5986) narrated it through the route of Shu'bah from 'Ali bin Mudrik from Hilal bin Yasaf from a man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: This same hadith is also reported from 'Imran bin Husayn through two other routes (Zurarah bin Awfa and Zahdam bin Mudarrib), which were narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban in their books.
