Sayyiduna Hujr bin Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) lived in the time of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) and in that era he even tasted blood (according to the custom of the Jahiliyyah). Then he attained the honour of companionship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and heard hadith from him (peace and blessings be upon him). He took part in the Battles of the Camel and Siffin alongside Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was martyred precisely because of his loyalty to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: Ibn Qutaybah refers to Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-'Asqalani, and Ibrahim bin Ya'qub refers to Imam al-Juzjani. Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have not found anyone other than the author (al-Hakim) who narrated this report, and our strong opinion is that "error and confusion" has occurred in it. Nowhere in the biography of Hujr bin 'Adi is it found that he ate blood in the Jahiliyyah; rather, this description belongs to "Hujr bin 'Anbas", who was a mukhadram (that is, he lived in the Jahiliyyah but did not meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi mentioned this in "Tarikh Baghdad" (9/ 196), and his report was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (10/ 20), al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (501), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1683), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (3571), Ibn Mandah (1/ 442) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2311), through the route of al-Fadl bin Dukayn from Musa bin Qays, stating that Hujr bin 'Anbas had eaten blood in the Jahiliyyah and was present with 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at the Camel and Siffin. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In short, in the author's report here the biographies of Hujr bin 'Adi and Hujr bin 'Anbas have been mixed up. The source of this error is either the author himself or a narrator above him. And Allah knows best.
