Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6068

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Buraydah that, describing the appearance of Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: He was light of body, short of stature, and had a thin beard.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In the manuscripts the word here has been distorted into "aqit" (with alif and qaf), whereas the correct word is "al-athatt" (with alif and tha').
Note / Clarification: "Athatt" refers to a person whose beard is sparse. Ibn Durayd said, as quoted in "Lisan al-'Arab", that although common people use the word "athatt", in eloquent Arabic it is only called "thatt".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Yunus (al-Kudaymi al-Qurashi) is a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator, but several other senior thiqah narrators have also narrated it from Rawh bin 'Ubadah; therefore through routes other than al-Kudaymi's this chain is "sahih".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (4/ 108), Ibn 'Asakir at (32/ 25), Ishaq bin Rahawayh as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (2985) and al-Harith bin Abi Usamah as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" (466), via Rawh bin 'Ubadah with this same chain. The narrations of Ishaq and al-Harith are lengthy and contain the whole story. Ibn 'Asakir also reported it through the route of Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id from Husayn al-Mu'allim.
