Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6048

It is narrated from Miqsam that Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned a need of his. He said: "Are you not the companion of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied: "Know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us beforehand that after him we would face favouritism and preference of others over us (and denial of our rights)." He asked: "Then what did he (peace and blessings be upon him) command you?" He said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to be patient until we meet him at the Pond (al-Kawthar)." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then be patient." At this, Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and swore that he would never speak to him again. Then Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and told him the whole story. So Ibn Abbas vacated his house for him just as Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub had vacated his house for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: "What do you want?" He said: "Four slaves to work at my place." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I have twenty slaves for you."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in its narrators, except that Miqsam (Ibn Bujrah, who is called the mawla of Ibn 'Abbas because of his constant attachment to him) did not hear from Abu Ayyub or Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with them both), so this narration of his is "mursal". This same hadith will come later from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) by another route under number (6054).
Important point: Identification of the narrators: Abu Hatim al-Razi is al-Hafiz Muhammad bin Idris, Ibrahim bin Musa is Ibn Yazid al-Razi, al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran, and al-Hakam is Ibn 'Utaybah.

Reference / Source: On the topic that "after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we would face selfishness (others being preferred over us), and we were commanded to be patient until we meet him at the Pond", there is the narration of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ahmad (19/ 12085), al-Bukhari (2376) and Muslim (1059), whose marfu' wording is: "You will see after me others being preferred over you, so be patient until you meet me"; meaning the Ansar.
