It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding the hand of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! You are dearer to me than everything in the world except my own self." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, by the One in whose Hand is my soul! (Faith will be complete) when I become dearer to you than even your own self." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Now you are dearer to me than even my own self." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now, O Umar! (your faith has reached perfection)."

Technical note: In our manuscripts this name was distorted into "Ahmad". The correct name is the one we have established here, as the author (al-Hakim) narrated reports with this same chain in many other places.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and its chain is, if Allah wills, "hasan". Technical note: Although there is some criticism (jarh) of both narrators "Rishdin" and "Ibn Lahi'ah", each of them has corroborated the other (i.e. it is narrated from both). Furthermore, "Haywah bin Shurayh" has also corroborated them, and he is a "thiqah" narrator. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (29/ 18047 and 31/ 18961) from Qutaybah bin Sa'id, and (37/ 22503) from Hasan bin Musa. Both of them narrate it from "Ibn Lahi'ah" alone. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it (nos. 3694, 6264, 6632) by way of Haywah bin Shurayh, from Abu 'Aqil Zuhrah bin Ma'bad.
