Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6020

It is narrated from Abu Firas, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), that when the time of death drew near for Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), he advised his son Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), saying: "When I die, wash me, shroud me and tie my lower garment firmly, for I will face a dispute (in the trial of the grave). Then, when you have washed me, carry my bier quickly. When you place me at the prayer ground (it was the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha), keep watch on the turnings of the roads; when no one is left and the people have gathered, first offer the funeral prayer over me and then offer the Eid prayer. Then, when you lower me into my lahd (grave), pour the earth over me, for my right side has no greater right to the earth than my left side. And when you have levelled the earth over me, sit by my grave for as long as it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that I may find comfort (and ease) in your presence."
