Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6012

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One night we were travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) struck the neck of my she-camel with his hand and then asked: "Do you have water?" I said: Yes, I have this leather water-skin with me. The narrator says: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and relieved himself, then came to me and asked: "Do you need to relieve yourself?" I said: No. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth three times, put water into his nose three times and washed his blessed face three times. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to bring out his forearms, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a narrow-sleeved woollen cloak, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) could not bring his forearms out of it. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought his hands out from under the cloak and then washed his forearms three times each. After that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over his head and wiped over his leather socks. Then we went on and reached the people, and Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading them in prayer. I wanted to inform him of the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped me. So we prayed one rak'ah with them and then completed our second rak'ah (after the salam).
This hadith is gharib and sahih in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, while this chain is weak because of the weakness of Bakr bin Sahl al-Dimyati, but he has been corroborated.

All of them narrate from al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (165), Ibn Majah (550) and al-Tirmidhi (97) narrated by way of al-Walid bin Muslim, from Thawr bin Yazid, from Raja' bin Haywah, from Warrad the scribe of al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, from al-Mughirah, who said: I helped the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform wudu' during the expedition of Tabuk, and he wiped over the top of the khuffs (leather socks) and their bottom.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus this narration is alone in mentioning "wiping the top and the bottom". Al-Tirmidhi reported from al-Bukhari and Abu Zur'ah that they said this hadith is not sahih, because Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it from Thawr, from Raja', who said: "I was told from the scribe of al-Mughirah," narrating it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "mursal", without mentioning al-Mughirah in it. And the mention of the bottom of the khuffs is "munkar".
