Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6011

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Zalim that Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to revile Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in his sermons, and he had appointed preachers who would revile him. Once, while he was delivering a sermon and saying unseemly words about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl al-Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) was seated beside me. He struck my hand with his hand and said: "Do you see what this man is saying? (Or he said: what these people are saying?) I bear witness concerning these nine persons that they are in Paradise, and if I were to swear an oath concerning the tenth as well, I would be truthful. We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on (Mount) Hira: myself, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talhah, al-Zubayr, Sa'd and Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with them), and the mountain began to tremble. At this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Be still! For upon you there is none but a Prophet, a Siddiq or a martyr.'"

Grading: Its marfu' part is sahih, and there is no harm in the narrators of this chain. But al-Nasa'i and al-Daraqutni stated firmly that Hilal bin Yisaf did not hear it from 'Abd Allah bin Zalim (as explained under number 5469). However, the marfu' part has other strong routes whose takhrij has passed there. In this narration the mention of two of the ten (promised Paradise) has dropped out: Sa'id bin Zayd and Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad bin Yunus is Ahmad bin 'Abd Allah bin Yunus al-Yarbu'i, and Husayn is Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami.
