Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6007

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'id al-Kindi that he said: We attended the funeral of Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he was lowered into his grave, suddenly a rider came and stopped by us and asked: Who is this one being hidden beneath the earth? We said: This is the governor of Kufah, al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah. By Allah! That man did not hesitate in the least and began reciting these verses: "Do you recognise the traces of the dwellings of al-Mughirah, over which the adulteresses of the jinn and of mankind play music? If you have met Haman after us, and Pharaoh, then know that the Lord of the Throne gives just recompense." The narrator says: The people of the tribe of Thaqif turned towards that rider and began to abuse him. By Allah! I do not know which way he disappeared. And the governorship of Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) over Kufah lasted seven years.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The name of this shaykh has come here as "al-Zubayr bin 'Abd Allah" (his father's name in the full, non-diminutive form), and likewise in al-Hakim's narration in al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10428), and in a report narrated from al-Hakim in al-Khatib's "Tarikh Baghdad" (8/ 362) the name is also the same. Al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (11/ 365) and al-Dhahabi in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (13/ 212) also give this same name (non-diminutive). However, al-Khatib, when giving this shaykh's biography in "Tarikh Baghdad" (9/ 495), wrote the father's name as "'Ubayd Allah" (diminutive) and also reported the same from al-Hakim. Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/ 323) and al-Dhahabi in "Tarikh al-Islam" (8/ 322) also gave his biography under the name "'Ubayd Allah" (diminutive). Allah knows best.

Note / Clarification: Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "bil-Mughirah".

Grading: Its chain is "talif" (utterly worthless). Hisham bin al-Kalbi (Hisham bin Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib) is a "Rafidi" and "matruk" (abandoned), and his shaykh is unknown.
Reference / Source: Al-Baladhuri narrated it in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (13/ 350) from 'Abbas bin Hisham al-Kalbi, from his father, in the same way.
