It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be people in my Ummah who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will exit from the religion just as an arrow exits from the game, and then they will not return to it. Their sign will be shaving the head." Abdullah bin al-Samit said: I met Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) (the brother of al-Hakam bin Amr al-Ghifari) and asked him: I heard such-and-such a hadith from Abu Dharr? He replied: "What is surprising about that? I too heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is strong (qawi) because of 'Asim bin 'Ali (Ibn 'Asim al-Wasiti), and he has been corroborated. Reference / Source: Ahmad (33/ 20342) recorded it from Bahz bin Asad and Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim; Ahmad (20342 and 20346) from 'Affan; Muslim (1067) and Ibn Hibban (6738) by way of Shayban bin Farrukh; and Ibn Majah (170) by way of Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah; all five from Sulayman bin al-Mughirah, with this chain. Details of the narration: But none of them mentioned in the hadith the phrase "Their mark is shaving (the head)" (simahum al-tahliq). It is established in the narration of Hudbah bin Khalid (in Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Sunnah" 922 and al-Firyabi's "Fada'il al-Qur'an" 181), likewise in the narration of Shayban bin Farrukh (in Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" 2663 and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" 6/ 429), and in the narration of Muhammad bin Sinan al-'Awaqi (in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" 4461). But with all of these, except Ibn Abi 'Asim, Sulayman bin al-Mughirah mentioned this phrase with doubt, saying: "I think he said: 'Their mark is shaving (the head).'" Important point: Its mention is established without doubt in the narration of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi in his "Musnad" (449) from Shu'bah and Sulayman bin al-Mughirah, from Humayd bin Hilal; likewise in the narration of Ahmad in his "Musnad" (35/ 21531) from Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Shu'bah alone, from Humayd bin Hilal; and likewise in the narration of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (452) by way of Abu 'Imran al-Jawni, from 'Abdullah bin al-Samit. But the narration of Shu'bah and Abu 'Imran does not mention 'Abdullah bin al-Samit narrating from Rafi' bin 'Amr al-Ghifari. All of those mentioned above who recorded the hadith added in the narration the phrase: "the worst of creation and creatures" (sharr al-khalq wa al-khaliqah).
