حدثني أبو بكر محمد بن أحمد بن بالَوَيهِ، حدثنا إبراهيم بن إسحاق الحَرْبي، حدثنا مصعب بن عبد الله الزُّبيري، قال: وأبو عبد الرحمن حَبيبُ بن مَسْلَمة بن مالك بن وهب بن ثَعلَبة بن وائلة (1) بن عمرو بن شَيبانَ (2) الفِهْري، ورُويَ: أنَّ أبا ذرٍّ وغيرَه كانوا يُسمُّونه حبيبَ الرُّوم، لمُجاهَدَتِه لهم، أنافَ على أربعينَ سنةً ولم يَبلُغ الخمسينَ، قد كانت له صُحْبةٌ، توفي سنة ثلاثٍ وأربعين (3).
It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Abdullah al-Zubayri that the kunya of Sayyiduna Habib bin Maslamah al-Fihri (may Allah be pleased with him) is "Abu Abd al-Rahman". It is reported that Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) and other Companions used to call him "Habib of the Romans" because of his vigorous military service (against the Byzantines). His age was over forty years but had not reached fifty. He was a Companion of the Messenger, and he passed away in the year 43 AH.

(1) تصحف في (ز) إلى: واثلة، بالثاء المثلّثة، وأهمل هذا الحرف في (ص) و (م). والمثبت على الصواب من نسخة المحمودية كما في طبعة الميمان، وفاقًا لما في "نسب قريش" لمصعب الزبيري ص 447 وغيره من كتب الأنساب.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (Z) this is misspelled (tashif) as "Wathilah", with a tha, and in (S) and (M) this letter was left undotted. The adopted correct reading is from the Mahmudiyyah manuscript (as in the al-Mayman edition), in agreement with Mus'ab al-Zubayri's "Nasab Quraysh" (p. 447) and other books of genealogy.
(2) تصحف في نسخنا الخطية إلى: سنان.
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this name is misspelled (tashif) as "Sinan".
(3) وهو في "نسب قريش" لمصعب الزُّبيري ص 447، لكن دون ذكر سِنِّ حبيب بن مَسْلَمة وسنة وفاته.
Reference / Source: It is in Mus'ab al-Zubayri's "Nasab Quraysh" (p. 447), but without mention of Habib bin Maslamah's age and the year of his death.
وفي وصف أبي ذرٍّ له بذلك رواية مرسلة تقدَّمت عند المصنف برقم (5564) بسند رجالُه ثقات.
Important point: Regarding Abu Dharr's describing him this way, there is a "mursal" narration that has passed with the author at number (5564), with a chain whose narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
وقد اختُلف في سنة وفاة حبيب بن مَسْلَمة كما تقدم بيانه برقم (5565).
Note / Clarification: There is disagreement about the year of Habib bin Maslamah's death, as has been explained at number (5565).
