It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) during winter. He asked (for the ruling) and was told to take a ritual bath (ghusl). He bathed and died. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "They killed him, may Allah destroy them! Allah has made clean earth (or: tayammum) a means of purification."
This hadith is sahih (authentic). Although its narrator al-Walid bin Ubaydullah has very few hadith, this narration is strengthened by other supporting reports.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(3064). Grading: This chain is "hasan" because of al-Walid bin 'Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rabah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Several narrators narrated from al-Walid bin 'Ubayd Allah, and Imam Yahya bin Ma'in declared him thiqah, as in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (9/9); Ibn Hibban also mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" (7/549), but Imam al-Daraqutni declared him weak in "al-Sunan" (3064). Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it (1314) via the chain of Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli from 'Umar bin Hafs. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the narration of Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Abu Dawud (336), but its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration will come later at nos. (640) and (641), but there is a break (inqita') in its chain, because Imam al-Awza'i did not hear it directly from 'Ata' (bin Abi Rabah).
