حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب من أصل كتابه، حدثنا بَكّار بن قُتيبة القاضي، حدثنا أبو المُطَرِّف بن أبي الوَزير، حدثنا موسى بن عبد الملك بن عُمير، عن أبيه، عن شَيْبة بن عثمانَ الحَجَبي، حدثني عمِّي عثمانُ بنُ طلحة: أنه سمع رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "ثلاثٌ يُصفِّين لك وُدَّ أَخِيكَ: تُسلِّمُ عليه إذا لَقِيتَه، وتُوسِّعُ له في المَجلِس، وتَدعُوه بأحبِّ أسمائه إليه" (1). أبو المُطرِّف محمد بن أبي الوَزِير مِن ثقات البَصرِيِّين وقُدمائِهم، لا أعلمُ أني عَلَوتُ له في حديث غيرِ هذا. ذكرُ مناقب عبد الله بن مالك بن بُحَينة ﵁ -

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Three things make your brother's love for you sincere: that you greet him with salam when you meet him, that you make room for him in the gathering, and that you call him by the name dearest to him."
Abu al-Mutarrif Muhammad bin Abi al-Wazir is among the reliable (thiqah) and early narrators of Basrah; I do not know of any other hadith of his in which I have a high (short) chain besides this one.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لضعف موسى بن عبد الملك بن عُمير. قال أبو حاتم فيما نقله عنه ابنه في "العلل" (2279): هذا حديث منكر، وموسى ضعيف الحديث. أبو المطرف بن أبي الوزير: هو محمد بن عمر بن مُطرِّف. وعثمان بن طلحة ابن عم شيبة بن عثمان وليس عمَّه، وقد كان بعضهم يُطلق على ابن العَمّ عَمًّا إذا كان أكبر سِنًّا توقيرًا له.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of Musa bin Abd al-Malik bin Umayr. Abu Hatim said (as his son reported from him in "al-Ilal" 2279): This hadith is munkar, and Musa is weak in hadith. Abu al-Mutarrif bin Abi al-Wazir is Muhammad bin Umar bin Mutarrif. Uthman bin Talhah is the paternal cousin of Shaybah bin Uthman, not his paternal uncle; however, some would call a paternal cousin "uncle" out of respect when he was older.
وأخرجه البيهقي في "الشعب" (8397)، و "الآداب" (191) عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.

وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" (3496) و (8369) من طريق إبراهيم بن أبي الوزير، عن موسى بن عبد الملك به.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3496 and 8369) through the route of Ibrahim bin Abi al-Wazir, from Musa bin Abd al-Malik, with this chain.
وقد روي هذا من كلام عمر بن الخطاب موقوفًا عليه عند معمر في "جامعه" (19865)، وابن المبارك في "الزهد" (352) و (666)، وابن أبي الدنيا في "مكارم الأخلاق" (316)، والبيهقي في "الشعب" (8398). وهو الصواب.
Important point: This has been narrated as the saying of Umar bin al-Khattab himself, "mawquf" on him, in Ma'mar's "al-Jami'" (19865), Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Zuhd" (352 and 666), Ibn Abi al-Dunya's "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (316) and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Shu'ab" (8398). And that is the correct version.
