Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5922

It is narrated concerning Abu Uhayb, Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah bin Khalaf bin Wahb bin Hudhafah bin Jumah (may Allah be pleased with him), that he embraced Islam at the time of the Conquest of Makkah, and he passed away in the year 43 AH.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Ibn Numayr gave Safwan's kunyah as "Abu Uhayb", while others gave it as "Abu Wahb", such as Abu al-Yaqzan (as Khalifah quoted from him in "al-Tabaqat" p. 24), Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (8/10), Ahmad bin Hanbal in "al-Asami wa al-Kuna" (353), al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/304), Muslim in "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (3484), and others.
Note / Clarification: It has also been said that his kunyah was "Abu Umayyah", as it has come in some narrations that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him "Abu Umayyah" (as in "Maghazi al-Waqidi" 1/125 and "Sirat Ibn Hisham" 2/440).
Note / Clarification: There is disagreement about the year of Safwan bin Umayyah's death. It is said that he died in the year 41 AH; al-Haytham bin Adi said this (as in Ibn Zabr al-Raba'i's "Mawlid al-Ulama' wa Wafayatihim" 1/137). It is also said that he died in the year 42 AH, and this is the view of the majority; Khalifah bin Khayyat said this in his "Tarikh" (p. 205), as did Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" (3/191), Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 344), and others.
