It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that the man who said on the day of Saqifah Bani Sa'idah, "I am its (the people's) little wooden rubbing post against which (mangy camels) rub themselves for relief (meaning: I am highly experienced and trustworthy, and I am the great fenced tree on which one leans for support)," was a man of Banu Salimah called Sayyiduna al-Hubab bin al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The report is sahih, and the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is "mursal". However, it is one of the mursal reports of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, and according to the scholars his mursal reports are the most authentic of mursal reports. Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (9758) narrated from Ma'mar bin Rashid, from al-Zuhri, that Urwah bin al-Zubayr also narrated this to him. Important point: Ibn Mandah in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1/398) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2254) mentioned that Sulayman bin Bilal narrated it with a connected chain (musnad) from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). We say: It is in al-Bukhari (3668) with the mention of part of what al-Hubab bin al-Mundhir said on the day of al-Saqifah, but it does not contain the phrase that Ibn al-Musayyab reported from him. Technical note / Defect ('illah): His mention also occurs in some routes of the long hadith of al-Saqifah which Ibn Abbas narrates from Umar bin al-Khattab. But naming him in this hadith of Umar is an "idraj" (an insertion by a narrator), as Ibn Hajar pointed out in "Fath al-Bari" (21/606). The "mahfuz" (preserved) version is that Umar said in his hadith (as in al-Bukhari's narration: 6830): "A man from the Ansar said", thus without naming him.
