It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most merciful of my Ummah towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr; the sternest of them in the matter of Allah is Umar; the most truthful of them in modesty is Uthman; the foremost reciter of the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b; the most expert of them in the knowledge of inheritance (fara'id) is Zayd bin Thabit; and the most knowledgeable of them about the lawful and the unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal. Know that every nation has a trustee (amin), and the trustee of this nation is Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah."
This chain is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording; they agreed, with this chain of theirs, only on the mention of Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), and I have explained its reason in my book "al-Talkhis".

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it reads "ala inna", with the waw dropped.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi (Ibn Abd al-Majid) is corroborated by a group of trustworthy narrators in narrating it "connected" (mawsul) and in full, so the "mursal" narration of whoever narrated it that way does not harm it. That is why al-Dhahabi said in "Tarikh al-Islam" (2/408): It is sahih as the hadith of Abu Qilabah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Muthanna is Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna al-Anbari, Muhammad bin Ayyub is Ibn Yahya bin al-Durays al-Razi, Khalid al-Hadhdha' is Ibn Mihran, and Abu Qilabah is Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (154), al-Tirmidhi (3791), al-Nasa'i (8229) and Ibn Hibban (7131, 7137 and 7252) narrated it through various routes from Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan sahih". Reference / Source: Ahmad (20/12904) narrated it through the route of Sufyan al-Thawri; and Ahmad (21/13990) and al-Nasa'i (8185) through the route of Wuhayb bin Khalid. Both of them narrate it from Khalid al-Hadhdha', with this chain. Reference / Source: Among those who also narrated it "connected" (mawsul) and in full are Abu Shihab Abd Rabbih bin Nafi' al-Hannat (in al-Baladhuri's "Ansab al-Ashraf" 6/105) and Bishr bin al-Mufaddal (in Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran's "Sab'at Majalis min Amalihi" 45). Both of them narrate it from Khalid al-Hadhdha' in the same way. 2/ 676 - 687. Important point: Another group differed from them and narrated the long hadith as "mursal", except for the mention of Abu Ubaydah, which they narrated "connected" (mawsul). See al-Khatib's "al-Fasl lil-Wasl" (2/676-687). Reference / Source: It was narrated in abridged form (with the mention of Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah alone) by Ahmad (19/12357 and 21/13563), al-Bukhari (4382 and 7255) and Ibn Hibban (7001) through the route of Shu'bah; Ahmad (20/12966) and Muslim (2419) through the route of Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah; al-Bukhari (3744) through the route of Abd al-A'la bin Abd al-A'la; and al-Nasa'i (8143) through the route of Muhammad bin Abi Adi and the route of Bishr bin al-Mufaddal. All five of them narrate it from Khalid al-Hadhdha', with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3790) narrated it in full through the route of Ma'mar, from Qatadah, from Anas bin Malik, and said: "This hadith is gharib; we do not know it as the hadith of Qatadah except through this route." Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: There is no one in this chain whose condition needs examining except al-Tirmidhi's shaykh "Sufyan bin Waki'", and he was weak. Abd al-Razzaq differed from him, as in "Jami' Ma'mar" (20387), narrating it from Ma'mar from Qatadah as "mursal". So that is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version in the narration of Ma'mar from Qatadah. Something similar will come from Ibn Umar at number (6414) with a weak chain.
Note / Clarification: He also pointed to its being faulted as "mursal" in "Ma'rifat Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 114). It is as though here he is clarifying that what that hadith was faulted with is not actually a defect, and that is why he declared its chain sahih.
